The Holo ecosystem (made of hosts using HoloPorts or their own devices) is a way for distributed apps built on Holochain to be used via the normal, centralized system of the web. We hope that eventually the distributed apps built on Holochain will catch on enough that people will use them directly. When everyone is running Holochain both as host and user, hosting simply becomes a shared resource, and Holo becomes redundant. But, it’s hard to know when this might happen. It may also be the case that IoT devices will continue to require distributed hosting services long after everyone is using Holochain apps directly.
